I'm not a betting man, but if I was I'd be willing to put down a hefty sum on the guys in Dreamdecay being big fans of Swans--specifically Michael Gira's earlier, more abrasive output. Fern is a LOUD, violent, and dissonant record, and I've found myself drawn back to it over and over again for a few weeks now. This one comes courtesy of Jason out in Washington, and I'm not entirely sure if it's a demo or not. The band's 12" will be officially dropping soon. The Brian Jonestown Massacre - 1990 Demo

Leaked online earlier this month, this cassette demo is now the earliest known BJM recording. The tape, released 3 years before the band's first official studio album, is as raw and noisy as you might expect, and yet from the opening moments of the first track is undeniably the Brian Jonestown Massacre. This is a great listen for Anton Newcombe fans and it has a great story behind it. If you've somehow stumbled across this blog and have never heard The Brian Jonestown Massacre, I'd recommend heading over to The Committee to Keep Music Evil and picking up a copy of Take it From the Man before diving into this demo.

Eyes - A Candle In The Crown of The Dawn

Eyes are a now defunct psych/kraut/prog inspired group of weirdos who may or may not have a fucking octopus for a drummer. Seriously, some of the percussion on this record is absolutely insane. I don't want to short change the rest of the band either. Eyes had a real knack for creating beautiful, complex music with just the right amount of improv. My only gripe with this record is the vocals. They're rarely a focal point of any track, but they have a strange Bob Pollard in a tin can sound that threw me off at first. Slight reservations aside, I highly recommend checking Eyes out. You can grab the cassette from Field Hymns Records HERE.

Welcome to the 5th (and hopefully not the last) OngakuBaka Top 10 albums of the year list. Before we jump right in to our picks, we’ll explain the guidelines for the selection process.

1. These records are in no particular order.

2. No live records, “Best of” collections, box sets, or re-issues. The albums chosen had to be material released in 2011.

3. This is a collaborative effort between the two of us, and if we didn’t agree that an album deserved to make the cut, it didn’t make the list.

Shape Breaker - No Fun

Dan recently forwarded me a ton of backlogged submissions that we've been getting, and Shape Breaker stuck out like a sore thumb. Maybe it was the MBV trollin' artwork, or maybe it was because everything else he sent me sounded like Gin Blossoms covering Camper Van Beethoven. Either way, I've been listening to No Fun a lot lately. The record is far from perfect-- these guys do seem to get lost in their own lo-fi aesthetic from time to time. Still, Shape Breaker's noisy punk rock works more often than not, and they even pepper in some keyboards from time to time to spice things up. I think there's a ton of potential here and I look forward to hearing more from them.

Not sure why I didn't post this when we got the original submission in early August, but I was pleased to get a friendly reminder email a few days ago. Sometimes I need some prodding. Zorch is an Austin experimental noise duo that creates ethereal brain candy that has already grabbed the attention of Altered Zones, NPR, and Paste. There are moments in each of these 2 tracks that will bring to mind Battles, Animal Collective, and modern Boredoms. "E.M.F." is pretty killer around the 2 minute mark. While I was record shopping a few weeks back I was approached by dude who seemed pretty desperate to sell the store's final copy of his band's record. Red marble vinyl with hand drawn cover art in black crayon and blue pen. He said it was only $7, they made experimental pop, and name-dropped Sonic Youth, so I said why the fuck not and decided to help the kid out. I was pretty surprised when I gave this a spin when I got home. Pagojet reminds me of some of the earliest demos from bands like Of Montreal, Circulatory System, The Sunshine Fix, Olivia Tremor Control mixed with the slacker pop vocals of bands like Pavement, Beulah, and early Beck. There's definitely a few rough patches, and some of the tracks don't feel fully realized, but it's safe to say there's loads of potential here. You don't hear very many records like this anymore. "Alligator", "It's Your Head", and "Mambo Sack Seed" are a few of the highlights. You can snag a name your price download or an LP with original artwork for $10 shipped at their bandcamp.

One of the more interesting records I've come across in last couple of months, The Cambridge Library Murders sounds like the soundtrack to a lost 70's giallo flick. Phalangius is actually a DJ who operates under 20 or so different monikers. I'm not terribly familiar with his work, but as far as I can tell this was a one-off effort. If you're a fan of prog rock horror soundtrack icons Goblin or 70/80's horror films in general, you owe it to yourself to check this album out.

I had actually never heard of Slutever, but after a quick google search it seems like these girls have been gaining quite a few followers over the last year. This is a quick and enjoyable EP, and you could certainly lump them in with Wavves and Best Coast, but their snottier middle school 4-track adolescent sensibilities set them apart slightly. And since they aren't as popular that automatically makes them better. Right?

If you dug the his first album I posted a few years back, you'll absolutely love this release. Matt has continued to develop his lush instrumental dream pop/ambient soundscapes and the result is absolutely beautiful. Crawling Through Her Ghosts offers a nice alternative to the ear splitting sonic assault of Oliver Ackermann inspired shoegaze without coming off as a cutesy version of Zwan like other groups that probably cite Slowdive as a major influence.

From the accessibility of its first track, to the dark but danceable future sounds of the third track, to the slow-burning closing track, it's hard to pigeonhole these guys as yet another psychedelic rock collective. I'm embarrassed to admit it's almost been one year since I came across this. King Bee is a one-man-psychedelic-band out of Charlottesville, VA with virtually no information anywhere on the internet. In my searches for some recordings last year, I happened to download a folder labeled "king bee - masters" on Soulseek. Turns out the folder contained some of the tracks from an upcoming LP which is slated for a summer 2011 release on a new label out of Richmond called Dead Wizard. He also has a cassette on Terrible Transmission Tapes from 2009, which I have yet to find. This is some pretty genuine 60s British psychedelia, and I'm pretty excited to hear the LP in its entirety later this year. Lava lamp and tab of acid required.
